Description of Ming and Qing Furniture

China has a long history of furniture production, gradually giving rise to a furniture culture with distinct Chinese national characteristics over the past thousands of years. The most representative should be furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties typically show their exquisite craft value, artistic value, and historical cultural value. Furniture of the Ming Dynasty, also known as Ming style furniture, is usually made of hard wood, such as P.Santalinus, Ormosia henryi and Mesua ferrea. The wood features heavy colors, beautiful patterns and fine and hard texture. The Ming style furniture is of mainly wood frame construction, with particular features that are simple, elegant and unadorned and the stress on lines of bright and fresh artistic appeal. The making of the furniture brings the beauty of color and patterns of hard wood to its best advantage. There are virtually no carvings or engravings. In order to stress the beautiful lines, only decorative carvings are done locally in order not to affect the overall effect. The outst

Furniture of the Qing dynasty is quite different from that of the Ming Dynasty in the style of formative art. Qing furniture features heavy materials, large size and gorgeous decorations, The ways of expression include inlaying, carving and painting that give an impression of dignity, sedateness and luxury in sharp contrast to the Ming style of simplicity, light and cleverness and beauty. Qing furniture is mainly made of red sandal-
wood (P.Santalinius) and Adenanthera pavonina(red wood), matched with all kinds of decorations and makes, thus evolving a unique style of the Qing Dynasty. Qing furniture is mainly made in Beijing, Suzhou and Guangzhou, each having its own local styles, such as Beijing style, Suzhou style and Guangzhou style. Beijing style and Suzhou style have retained much of the traditional forms. The Guangzhou style, due to the influence of the Westren culture, is virtually westernized.
