In appreciation of furniture in Ming and Qing Dynasty, the test of "sixteen tastes" and "eight shortcomings" was adopted to tell whether it is good or bad, beautiful or ugly. At the very beginning, there were two objectives. The first is to indicate that the furniture of Ming Style is simple, plain, and frank, which, though famous all the time, is far from showi-

ng the full view. In addition, it is of different styles and grades, worthy of appreciation. Most of those styles have unique signs and symbols, which are self evident in their image, or of universal appeal. The second is to point out that, though the Ming Dynasty and the early period of the Qing Dynasty are the golden age of traditional furniture, it can never be that every piece of furniture is good. In terms of appreciation of furniture, we cannot close our mouth without discussion because of fear of different opinions form others, and for discussion and vivid atmosphere, the best way is to arrange for a proper environment so that all the people could watch, evaluate and appreciate the furniture thus displayed.
The layout and arrangement of furniture were different depending on the rooms and halls of the previous ages. The furniture and article in the hall seek for symmetry, which are fixed and necessarily reserved. Studies and living rooms seek for practical use, which are flexible and changeable. Thus, there must be contrasts in arrangement between symmetry and asymmetry, between fixed and flexible. Contrasts have better effects, which renders the corresponding articles more outstanding. Furthermore, contrast in and of itself means changeable and being not unitary. In practical life, a hall of three or five columns is no longer imaginable, which, however, does not hamper consciously adopting the two methods of symmetric and fixed arrangement and flexible arrangement, since contrast and changes can also be seen wherefrom.
